Hello hello, testing testing. Anyone there? Testing one, two, three. Mic check. It's all clear!
We've finally decided to blog our moments of AYPAL, starting from the past, to the present, to the future. So, because we are new to Blogger, we're gonna introduce ourselves to the community.
AYPAL - Asian/Pacific Islander Youths Promoting Advocacy and Leadership. We are a non-profit organization comprised of passionate (you know it) youths fighting for social justice and are committed to enhance their community that they live in.
Yeah, we are that involved.
Our three principles are community involvement (literally), youth ownership (the youths take part in the decisions in the organization), and promoting social justice.
We have six sites throughout the city of Oakland.
-ACMHS - Asian Community Mental Health Services (Khmer)
-CO - Campaign Organizers (Returning/Veteran Interns)
-FAA - Filipinos for Affirmative Action (Filipino)
-LIMCA - Lao Iu Mien Cultural Association (Laos and Mien)
-OASES - Oakland Asian Student Educational Services (Chinese and Vietnamese)
-PIKA - Pacific Islander Ki Association (Pacific Islanders like Tongans)
5 out of the 6 sites hold YLOs ( Youth Leadership Organization) meetings every week.
ACMHS meets at room 101 in the Asian Resource Center on the first floor every Tuesday, from 4:30 to 6:30
It is located on 310 8th Street
FAA also meets at room 101, but on Wednesdays from 4-6
LIMCA also meets at room 101, but on Thursday from 4:15-6:15
OASES meets at FM Smith Park located on Park Blvd, on Tuesdays, from 4:30-6:30
PIKA meets at Skyline High School on Tuesdays from 4-6
At these YLOs the interns teach YLOs about issues like racism, sexism, or capitalism. The interns go through a summer training where they learn how to facilitate, ways to facilitate, and all the issues they will be teaching others throughout the school year.
